Beginning Ubuntu Linux, Second Edition
This is a second edition of the popular Beginning Ubuntu Linux published in 2006. Over 100 new pages of information have been added to this version. The book also includes a copy of Ubuntu 6.10 and 6.06 on DVD as well as a copy of Kubuntu (a KDE based interface instead of the GNOME interface), and Edubuntu (an educational version with lots of additional educational titles).
The focus with Ubuntu Linux is to create a Debian based distribution that is very user friendly yet powerful enough to meet the needs of most users. It comes with a full Office Suite, web browser, instant messaging, CD/DVD burner software, multimedia software, and pretty much everything else you have come to expect in a desktop computer and more. The author has provided an extensive section on how to get the operating system installed correctly. It includes an great section on common problems and how to resolve them. If you want to delve more deeply into the system the author has included information on the BASH Shell.
While this is an introduction to Ubuntu and the various programs that come with it, many of these programs have whole books written about them and available from this publisher and many others. So, while this book gets you up and running and able to do the most common tasks, if you really want to take advantage of the power of some of the programs you need to consider one a good books on the subject as well as the online support community. Beginning Ubuntu Linux is highly recommended to anyone interested in this desktop alternative.

Great book
This was my first experience with Linux of any kind and this book really helped a lot. I ended up installing it on an older computer of mine and let the kids use it for all their internet stuff so they don't mess up mine! Turned out that I ended up doing a lot of my stuff on it too. Great operating system, great book, easy install, easy to work with. What more could you want!
