Front runners

Looks to me like there are only five contenders here and everyone else is an "also ran".  I can't wait for the review to be published but it is plain that the only possible contender for my money is Kindle, iRex, Fujitsu, Hanlin, or Sony.  Okay, Fujitsu is out for me because of the price.  I don't need color that bad.  Maybe in a couple of years when the price comes down to near what the others cost I'll take a look but for now it is not even a consideration for me.  If I am going to pay that much then I'll get one of the small handheld computers that actually cost less and will run ebook reader software.  Doesn't make any sense to get something that costs more and does less.

Sony

I got a Sony and am happy with it.  It does everything I need and more. Had a Kindle 1 and prefer this. Just a lot easier to work with.  I have a lot of documents that I need available and they can move on and off easy enough.

My feelings are kind of mixed with the bookshelf metaphor though. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't but some of the publishers are working with better ideas.  So, I have the reader I want and get the books I want, but not from Sony.  Try doing that with Kindle.

Poll updated

The poll has been updated to remove the "V9" from the Hanlin item (apparently not available yet) and to indicate that the Seiko-Epson is no longer considered a valid choice in the poll as their product can apparently no longer be purchased.

iLiad

I ponied up the extra and got a iLiad.  I could not be happier with it.  When I talk to my friends and hear their complaints I can always say that it is not a problem with the iLiad.  Theirs looks nicer, mine works better.

The only real problem is the lack of content.  Since I mainly read papers from colleages and research papers this works great and with the ability to annotate ebooks directly on the iLiad it is great.

If you just want to read the extra money is probably not worth it but if you interact with your books and scribble comments, notes and references then this is the only choice you have... or at least it is my understanding that it is the only one that allows it.  It definitely was when I bought mine last year.

fujitsu

I'm definitely interested in information about the Fujitsu.  I understand their color reader just went on sale in Japan this month and is a killer as well as a wallet drainer at over $1,000.  But it will apparently set the standard that the others will have to come up to.  I think this will shake up the market and if you can get a heads up on how Kindle and Sony will be competing it would very interesting.

Sony and Kindle

I have both the prior Kindle and a PRS-550.  The Sony is far better for my needs but I can see where some might prefer the Kindle.  In my opinion the bottom line is the Sony is the only choice if you deal a lot with technical books because is supports a wider variety of formats and the Kindle is better if you like fiction.  So, if you do mysteries and love stories and the like get a Kindle because of the fast access to so many books.  But if you spend more time with nonfiction then you will probably prefer the Sony.

I have the prior model for both of them and so can't confirm which is better these days but from a strict viewpoint of the book offerings there is a clear choice to me.

Researching this myself

I have been researching this myself for a purchase.  I marked and interest in the Fujitsu because I could not choose several of them.  I am really interested in whether you can get your hands on and try the Fujitsu, Seiko-Epson or Hanlin V9.  As far as I have been able to determine none of these are available as yet.

The Kindle is like closed source - effectively ties you into only Amazon purchases.  The iLiad appears overpriced - at least I have not been able to find any review that indicated why it was worth the extra dough.  And the Sony has far less books available than the Kindle.  And none of them appear to handle the DRM problem so those books can only be read on your home computer or laptop.

I hope your review turns out something better because as best as I can figure out it is not time to move to the electronic format yet.

Can't go wrong

Can't go wrong with the Sony.  I bought it only because it was at the local BooksAMillion and I had a chance to touch and try it.  Plus you get a lot of free books with it.  Aggravatingly slow on page turns but I assume the others are no better.  Makes it awkward for a quick reader.  Other than that I am very happy.

Kindle rocks

Kindle is great.  Very convenient with the ability to download a book anywhere.  Just wish it supported pdfs better and adobe DRM in particular as many of the publishers I get my technical books from use adobe DRM enabled books.  I have to use my laptop for the books I want to carry on my Kindle the most!
